One-leg stances

– One-leg stances –

In this group of Taekwon-do stances, one foot is fully on the ground while the other either is not or is only touching the ground with a maximum of 10 percent.

There are four different stances:
Side-bending stance, One-leg stance, Jumping X-stance and X-stance.

Side bending stance

This stance has one leg on the ground and one leg raised. The standing leg is parallel to the AB line. The raised leg is turned away at a 45-degree angle. The standing leg is nearly straight. The foot of the raised leg is pulled up to knee height of the standing leg. The upper body is in the direction of the CD line.

The stability of this stance is minimal because only one leg is on the ground.

This stance is only used in the side bending posture.

A left side bending stance has the left leg on the ground.

Weight distribution: standing leg 100%.
Dimensions: long foot width & wide foot length.

One-legged stance

One foot is on the ground, the other is lifted. The foot on the ground is positioned at an angle of 15 degrees from the CD line. The lifted leg points straight forward with the foot at knee height of the standing leg. The upper body is parallel to the AB line. Due to the very small support base and the high center of gravity, the stability of this position is low.

This stance is used both for hand techniques and in the back bending posture.

In a left one-leg stance, the left foot is on the ground.

Gewichtsverdeling: standbeen 100%.
Afmetingen: lang voetlang & breed voetbreed.

Jumping X-stance

This position is preceded by a jump (as the name suggests). In the jumped X-stance, the feet are placed side by side, with the front foot completely on the ground and the back foot’s ball touching the ground. This foot crosses behind with the toes on the heel line of the front foot. Both legs are slightly bent. The upper body is parallel to the AB line.

With a jump, the opponent comes within reach, allowing a technique to be executed where body weight adds extra power to the technique. After this position, it is easy to twist through.

A jumping X-stance has taken the X-stand with the right foot forward.

Weight distribution: 90% on the rear leg & 10% on the front leg.
Dimensions: length 1½ feet & width 2 feet.

X-stance

In this position, the front foot is placed with the ball of one foot on the ground and the other foot completely on the ground. The feet are now next to and against each other. The front leg crosses over the other, and the ball of the front foot is placed on the outside. Both legs are slightly bent. The upper body is parallel to the AB line.

The position is accepted if a shift with a step has been made beforehand. The position has a small support base and the center of gravity is high. This position is not stable, but it is very suitable for stepping sideways or for turning.

In an X-stance, the right foot is positioned behind.

Weight distribution: rear leg 90% & front leg 10%.
Dimensions: length 1½ feet & width 2 feet.
