– All Stances –

The stance is the foundation of a Taekwon-do arm technique. There are 17 stances divided into four main groups.

Arm techniques are performed in stances. Leg techniques are mostly performed standing on one leg, with no stance attached.

The position of the feet, the bend of the knees, the direction of the legs and the position of the hips and upper body determine the stance. The whole is called a stance.

Each stance has its own character, making it possible to emphasise a technique’s strength, speed or stability in different ways.

For the dimensions within a stance, the norm ‘shoulder width’ is used. This measurement is not the same for everyone: tall people create larger stances than short people. The ‘shoulder width’ measurement is a personal measure because tall people can have narrow shoulders, and short people can have broad ones. It is therefore important to personally define ‘shoulderwidth’ in order to shape the stances accordingly.
